The Impact of Beds on Bedroom Design

In years past, beds were not considered to be an element that factored into bedroom design, more just a place to lay your head, although the bed could be dressed to match whatever style had been chosen for the bedroom.

Times have changed and with the return of bedsteads or frame beds, the bed is now an element that factors in quite highly in bedroom design. The range of styles, colours, fabrics and materials that today’s modern beds are manufactured from go to enhance and work in synergy with all bedroom design plans.

The decision of the type of bed to purchase in relation to design can be broken down into three steps:

The aesthetic of the room.

Deciding on the aesthetic of a room or the way that it looks is not as difficult as it may seem at first. In most cases you will already have a good source of inspiration from the other rooms in the house, but let’s say for arguments case that it is a blank canvas. In that case the world is your oyster as there are so many places to draw ideas from; -The internet -Interior design book/magazines -Ideal home exhibition type shows -New property development show houses (always a favorite of mine) -Furniture retail showrooms (you don’t always have to shop) -Friends and relative’s houses

Once you have got your inspiration for how the room is going to look you need next to plan how the bed is going fit in the room.

Where to position the bed

This can be something that gets overlooked at this stage and can result in being quite costly if other purchases are made such as furniture without this in mind. It is therefore important that before purchasing of any bedroom furniture takes place, consideration is given to the following.

Size of bed - will there be sufficient space around the bed to meet your requirements i.e. opening wardrobe doors, doors, getting changed round the bed etc etc.

Position of bed - have you planned on buying bunk beds that the steps will only go on one side and thus will only go on one wall or a captain’s bed with the same problem.

Height of the bed - you may have taken into consideration the length and width of the bed, but what about height? This is not a problem for about 98% of beds, but is a big consideration when buying a four poster bed. Have you measured the height of the room and will that four poster fit in term of height?

We have so far worked out the style and limitations of the room in which you are going to house your bed, but there is one last consideration to take into account before you part with any of your hard earned cash. That final consideration is what you use your bedroom for or “How do you live in your bedroom”

How do you live in your bedroom?

As mentioned in the introduction bedrooms have become a multifunctional space, and these days are used as offices, somewhere to watch TV, listen to music or a quiet place to read or get away from the grind. All of these are key components that need to be considered when deciding on the type of bed that you will buy.

It is now time to go and purchase that dream bed. Now that you have followed the steps above you should be confident that the purchasing decision will be a calculated one, and one made from consideration as opposed to impulse. By using the rest of this guide as a would be “bed purchasing bible”, you will feel at ease when confronted with “jargon” and “terminology”, and most of all you will be in the driving seat when it comes deciding on the type of bed for you!

In summary; a bed is the centerpiece of any bedroom and time and consideration should be spent on the whole process of planning and choosing the bed that will be suited to your requirements. As mentioned in the introduction “a decision to buy a bed should have the same amount of time and effort spent on it as purchasing a car”, if this is followed, and in conjunction with the advice from this guide, you will find yourself making a purchasing decision that will not just enhance the style and functionality of a bedroom, but will also result in a comfortable nights sleep.

Area Rugs 101

Area rugs are a great way to accentuate portions of a room and add to the mood and ambience of the interior decoration by harmonizing colors and shapes. Ideally, the primary colors of the rug should complement the wall, furniture, and furnishing colors. The rugs can be used to focus attention on another aspect of interior decoration or can be used as the center of attraction. Large, centrally placed medallion rugs garner maximum attention. Area rugs are available in a variety of materials, textures, and shapes.

Area rugs are an excellent combination of form and utility and beautifully crafted hand rugs are veritable works of art. Most handmade area rugs are made from fine quality wool that is capable of withstanding the rigors of heavy traffic and regular cleanings. High quality handmade area rugs may have a density of 750 knots per square inch and above.

Area rugs have evolved into unique shapes and designs all over the world. Oval braided rugs have history dating back to the colonial period in the U.S. They are popular even today and oval braided rugs in shades such as brown, blue, or green lend a rustic feel to a room. Area rugs can also have a luxurious lush pile in warm colors that accentuate a feeling of cozy comfort. Mexican rugs and dhurries from India can alter the tone of an arrangement of furniture such that it acquires a characteristic distinct from the rest of the room.

Area rugs require to be taken care of and if the rug is not too bulky, it can be taken to the cleaners who have the expertise of handling area rugs made from different materials. Care should be taken that furniture is not placed on the newly washed wet rugs otherwise the rugs will carry permanent marks. Spills should be diluted with water and brushed gently from outside to the center.

The cost of an area rug depends upon its manufacturing process and materials used. Handmade Persian and Oriental rugs can be expensive. Machine-manufactured rugs that are durable and can stand wear and tear are available for as low as fifty dollars; at the same time there are area rugs that can cost a few thousand dollars and are often used in mansions and hotel lobbies to complement the fine furniture in these places.

Wood floors and area rugs complement one another amazingly well; wood floors are elegant and easy to clean and area rugs offer a variety of options to accentuate the character of a room with wooden flooring and also act as a source of warmth for the feet on cold winter days. Area rugs fit in with the décor of every room and this adds to their appeal; they not only enliven a dull room but also help to reduce noise levels.

Federal Aviation Administration Proposes Rules for Space Flight

Due to the success of Space Ship One, the World Famous Space Craft and the fact that already 38,000 people have put down deposits and gotten themselves onto a waiting list for a $200,000.00 plus ride into space. Very excellent news for the commercial space flight industry, unfortunately the FAA is now moving to make regulations.

So far the regulations proposed are simple enough; Space Crews must have medical certificate and pilot’s licenses. Companies must have liability insurance too, which is actually available thru Lloyds of London. The real problem is not necessarily these first set of proposed rules, the real problem is that once you start making rules and regulations, these agencies “ALWAYS” make more rules and it is never ending. It is as if it is job security. We should be hesitant to making rules this early in the game and if we do, we must add one rule to these proposed rules;

“If any more rules or regulations are made then one rule or regulation must be taken away and if any further definitions are added to any rules, then the rules must make an additional exemption for the rules which currently exist”

Down size government, down size regulatory bodies and stop over regulation the innovation and industry. Think on this in 2006

Is it Mindset or Mind Set?

If you go to the dictionary, you will find a long list of definitions for mindset, mind, and set. Interestingly they all come before success!

Mind-set (noun) beliefs that affect somebody’s attitude - a set of beliefs or a way of thinking that determine somebody’s behavior and outlook

Mind (noun) seat of thought and memory - the center of consciousness that generates thoughts, feelings, ideas, and perceptions and stores knowledge and memories

Set (verb) focus on something - transitive verb to focus on a goal or task - had set his mind on it

This is not a grammar lesson, and maybe it doesn’t matter how you spell mindset. What does matter is you need to better understand what it is if you wish to be successful. There I spelled it with one word. I’ll continue to spell it with one word; you can use two if you wish.

The spelling is less important than the understanding of just how critical your mindset is to you, especially if you are in a highly competitive environment like sales, sports or business.

Go back and read the definition of mindset again. “A way of thinking that determines somebody’s behavior and outlook.” Every day we have choices to make. Life is all about choices. We choose between right and wrong, good and evil. Being positive or negative.

Think about the impact of mindset. Say you awake and tell yourself, “Am I ever tired this morning, this is going to be one very long day.” Where do you think your energy level is going to be? Let’s say you awake and say to yourself, “This is going to be a great day. I can’t wait to get to at it.” How many dragons do you think you could slay? How we think subconsciously impacts our conscious behaviors. The psychologists call the study of this phenomenon, cognitive behavioral science. It truly is fascinating.

It has been proven repeatedly that our internal self-talk determines our attitude, disposition and actions. Think about the person who has said for years, “I’m great with faces but terrible with names.” Repeating this over and over do you wonder if the mind has taken it as fact and only concentrated on facial recognition, totally ignoring the name, as you have convinced the mind the name isn’t important.

The good news is we can change how we think. We can re-train the mind. Like so much in life, it won’t happen over night; however, it is much easier than you might think. The key is to consciously catch your negative thoughts. In our example with names, if the person caught himself or herself saying they were not good with names and began having their inner voice say, “I’m getting better at remembering names, I just have to concentrate.” Then use what ever trick works for you, name association, using the person’s name in conversation right away to focus on it, what ever.

How often have you heard the world-class athlete comment how they visualize winning their race or event? Their “mental coach” has become as important as their “performance coach” in their training and conditioning.

If you work in the sales arena, you probably know some top sales professionals who appear to always be “up”. They are optimistic, have an organized mind and success just seems to come to them. They have learned, usually from experience, or a mentor, that a person who is an effective thinker is more successful. By effective thinker, I mean someone who controls and leverages his or her inner voice. This person understands the power of visualizing success, of believing in themselves, and believing in their clients. Their positive self-talk enables them, it doesn’t distract them.

I would encourage you, regardless of occupation, to learn more about the power of effective thinking. Do a Google search on Dr. Clayton Lafferty, Dr. David McClelland and Dr. Henry Murray who have all been key contributors to better understating the impact of mindset.

Become and effective thinker, manage your mindset!

Vegas Travel

Las Vegas is the most populous city in the state of Nevada. The city has a reputation for being one of the wildest places on the planet, and, for this reason, it is also known as “Sin City.” Las Vegas is a very popular tourist city because of its legalized gambling, availability of alcoholic beverages at any time, and so on.

It was in the beginning of the nineteenth century (1905) that Las Vegas was established, and it formally became a city in 1911. In the early 1900s, the city became famous as a railroad town. During the twentieth century, Las Vegas evolved into one of the largest cities in the country. The expansion of the railroads and the building of the Hoover Dam infused new life into Las Vegas. Las Vegas has some wonderful neighborhoods, such as Green Valley, Summerlin, Henderson, Red Rock, Anthem, and Southern Highlands.

The city takes pride in some of its famous places, which a tourist must include in his itinerary. One of these is the main university of Southern Nevada, The University of Nevada, Las Vegas, which came into being in 1957. The university has its main campus in North Las Vegas. The city’s popular museums include the Guinness World of Records Museum; Liberace Museum, Las Vegas Art Museum; Nevada State Museum and Historical Society, which demonstrates Nevada’s history; and Las Vegas Natural History Museum, which displays wildlife and dinosaur exhibits.

Economic Growth Expected to continue in Northern Cyprus

The finance minister for Cyprus, Charilaos Stavrakis, has announced that economic growth in the North of the island is expected to continue. The government puts the predicted growth over the next quarter at at least 4%, but that percentage could improve. With the tourist and holiday season now in swing, there could even be a peak, signaling a triumphant flourish that symbolizes perfectly the boom in economy that Cyprus, and Northern Cyprus in particular, has seen in recent times. The only thing that mars that growth is a slight downturn during the earlier period of the year - roughly between March and April - that caused some skeptics to fear that the economic rise was on its way to decline. But the Cypriot government argues that the increased revenue that the tourist sector will generate over the summer months more than adequately cancels out that drop, and those who thought that the boom might be a short-term success will perhaps be proved wrong. Indeed the rising margin for economic growth in Cyprus seems to be stable and legitimate; not the result of a trigger cause, and as such unlike to die out quickly. It is in fact the result of many long term factors, problems that have troubled the island for a number of years, and problems that now seem to be drawing to a close. One key factor is the potential reunification of the island and the relative peace that the suggestion has brought to Cyprus. For perhaps the first time, the Greek Cypriot president and the Turkish Cypriot president are both genuinely committed to talks about reunification. Indeed the Turkish Cypriot president Mehmet Ali Talat has called his counterpart to enter into talks that could see the island reunited by the end of this year, and Greek Cypriot president Demetris Christofias seems keen, with three meetings between the two leaders already having furthered the issue, and a fourth scheduled for September 3rd. The good will between the two sides has led to a boom in tourism, which is certainly one reason for the upturn in economy; sitting within one of the most popular climates in the world, Cyprus has always been a potentially interesting area for tourism. But the strife that followed the independence debates after World War II, and the subsequent conflicts between Turkish Cyprus and Greek Cyprus over constitutional and cultural points, and fought at state and community level, has meant that it has perhaps been viewed as a potentially volatile destination. Now that chapter of its history seems to be coming to a close, and the tourism sector is benefiting. So to is the economy, and as a result, so too, is the property industry. Indeed, the island of Cyprus, but Northern Cyprus particularly, is one of most sought after places for property in the whole of Europe, and perhaps the world. With the economy booming, experts predict that those who invest now could see a substantial and rapid return on that investment.

The Tooth, the Whole Tooth and Nothing But the Tooth!

There is something about a toothache that whenever we are tormented by one, it always seems to make you feel that the sensitivity experienced is worse than all other aches or pains from which we tend to suffer. This is probably because, no matter what we try, the nagging ache just never seems to go away. An explanation could be that they are often linked to exposed nerves and their very nature makes it virtually impossible to avoid contact, through the necessity to eat and drink.

The causes of a toothache can usually be traced to things like dental cavities, a cracked tooth, an exposed tooth root, gum disease, disease of the jaw joint, or spasms of the muscles used for chewing. The severity of a toothache can range from chronic and mild to sharp and unbearable. The first sign of a toothache may be the pain you feel when you eat something sweet, very cold or very hot and this very often points to decay. If you notice pus near the source of the pain, your tooth may have become abscessed, causing the surrounding bone to become infected.

Dental Cavities are probably the most frequent cause of a toothache. They are the holes in the two outer layers of a tooth called the enamel and the dentin. The enamel is the outermost white hard surface and the dentin is the yellow layer just beneath the enamel. Both layers serve to protect the inner living tooth tissue called the pulp, where blood vessels and nerves reside. The cause of toothache occurs when certain bacteria in the mouth converts simple sugars into acid. The acid softens and (along with saliva) dissolves the enamel and dentin, creating cavities and this is the cause of toothache. Small shallow cavities may not create pain and may go unnoticed, but the larger deeper cavities can collect food debris.

People will try just about anything to ease the distress that a toothache brings with it. However, prevention is probably the greatest of cures! The condition of the teeth after they are formed depends upon the foods one eats from day to day. Dental decay, the destruction of the bone around the teeth, and infection of the gums can be prevented with an appropriate diet. In fact, with a proper diet, the teeth and jaw bones can be made harder and healthier as the years go by. It is important to restrict the sugar intake, and to ensure that the diet includes plenty of raw vegetables and whole wheat bread.

In preventing tooth decay, what one eats is no doubt important, but equally important is when someone eats. Frequent small snacks are very harmful to teeth, as they produce an acid medium in which the bacteria thrive. The number of times someone eats sugar is one of the most important factors in determining the rate of decay. For this reason, it is better to eat sweets at the end of a meal rather than in between. Proper cleaning of the teeth is essential to prevent tooth decay and subsequent toothache. For this reason it is imperative that children are made aware at a very early age of the importance of brushing - no matter how much they protest, they’ll thank you in the end!

Discover How to Grow Your Own Source of Vitamins, Fiber, Proteins, and More

Sprouts not only taste good, but they are also a great source of
vitamins, fiber, protein, anti-oxidants, and enzymes. A sprout is
produced when a seed starts growing into a vegetable. Sprouts can
grow from the seeds of vegetables, from grains such as buckwheat,
and from beans. While Mung beans are perhaps the most common
source of sprouts, you can also obtain good results from lentils,
soybeans and chickpeas just to name a few.

Sprouts can be grown almost anywhere and the best part is you
only need a few basic supplies to get started. By following a few
simple steps, you can receive a continual supply of nutritious
sprouts.

While there are several commercial products available to
cultivate sprouts, here are three of the easiest methods to help
you get started.

- Growing Sprouts in Flower Pots -

1. Start with a clean clay or plastic flower pot. Make sure
there is a hole in the bottom of the pot to ensure good drainage.
Then place a piece of cheesecloth or muslin in the bottom of the
pot over the hole so that the seeds/beans cannot fall out.

2. Next, soak the seeds or beans overnight and then put them in
the pot. Remove any that are broken or damaged. Cover the plant
pot with a dish.

3. Once a day, hold the pot under running water for a few
minutes. This is to soak the seeds/beans thoroughly.

4. Once the sprouts begin to show, remove the dish and cover the
pot with a piece of clear plastic wrap to let in the light. Place
the sprouting pot near a window that allows daylight but is not
in direct sunlight.

- Growing the Sprouts in Trays -

1. Soak the seeds or beans overnight. Remove any that are broken
or damaged before you begin the sprouting process.

2. Select a low, flat dish (like a pie plate) or tray. You can
purchase growing trays wherever planting supplies are sold.

3. Next, spread out a 2-inch layer of soil and then sprinkle the
soaked seeds or beans on top of the soil.

4. Cover the seeds/beans with four layers of damp newspaper.

5. Cover the top of the tray with clear plastic wrap.

6. When the sprouts start to lift the plastic cover, (usually
about three days) remove the newspaper.

7. Place the tray in a window so that the light can turn the
sprouts green. You will need a space to place the sprouting tray
that receives daylight but is not in direct sunlight.

8. Because the thin layer of soil dries out quickly, water twice
each day.

9. After about 8-10 days, you will have sprouts tall enough to
harvest.

- Growing Sprouts in a Jar -

1. Soak the seeds, grains, or beans in lukewarm water overnight
in a wide-mouth glass jar. Remove any that are broken or damaged
before you begin the sprouting process. (Sprouting increases the
seed volume. 4-tablespoons will be sufficient for a quart size
container.)

2. In the morning, pour off the water in the jar and rinse the
seeds/beans thoroughly.

3. Place a piece of cheesecloth or muslin over the mouth of the
jar. Use a rubber band to hold the material securely in place.
This makes rinsing easier.

4. To keep the sprouts constantly damp, repeat the rinsing 2-3
times a day. Remember to drain any excess water because the
sprouts should not stand in water.

5. Keep the jar away from the light for the first few days.

6. When the seeds/beans begin to sprout, (usually about the
forth day) move the jar into the light to activate the
chlorophyll and turn the sprouts green.

- Harvesting and Storing the Sprouts -

Newly germinated grain, seed, and sprouts, increase in food value
in the very first period of growth. Grains should be harvested
and eaten from when they are six days old until they are 4-5
inches tall. To harvest, just take your kitchen scissors and cut
what you need.

Sprouts from beans, peas, etc., are ready earlier and can be
eaten when they are 3-6 days old, depending on the type of
sprout. For spouts grown in no soil or in seed trays, you can
harvest the green “grass” when it starts to grow. Sprouts, from
grain sown in jars, are ready sooner and are edible even before
they turn green. Seeds sown in soil take a little longer.

If necessary, wash the sprouts thoroughly to remove the seed
coat. Sprouts need to be stored in the refrigerator once they are
ready to eat. Put the sprouts in tight sealing bags, and they
will remain flavorful and crisp for one to two weeks. Rinsing the
sprouts daily under cold water can extend their life.

Sprouts may be frozen by blanching them over steam for three
minutes and then cooling them in ice water. Drain them and pack
into freezer containers.

- Some of the Kinds of Seeds/Beans You Can Sprout -

The following list gives some of the popularly sprouted
seeds/beans. It is not all inclusive as you can sprout almost any
kind of seed. Remember that seeds soak up 2-3 times their dry
volume in water and sprouts need at least six times the volume
occupied by the seeds. So be sure that your container is large
enough, and start with a minimal amount of seed in a container
like a jar, until you determine the correct quantity that will
grow to the sprout size you like, without being difficult to
remove.

Your local garden shop or health food store will carry a line of
seeds for sprouting. When purchasing seeds for sprouting, be
certain that the seeds are intended for food and not for
planting. This precaution is necessary because some seeds meant
for planting have been treated with fungicides or insecticides to
protect the young seedlings when planted in a field or garden.

Alfalfa - should be soaked for 6-12 hours. The seeds can be
planted in the pots or jars and also in the flats with soil.
1-part seed gives 10-parts sprouts in approximately 5-6 days.
Sprouts can be eaten after 3 days. When the root is 1-2 inches
long, it will begin to develop tiny green leaves. At this stage,
it needs to be eaten immediately so the plant will not switch to
photosynthesis that exhausts the stored food in the seed.

Peas - when soaked in a glass jar, will grow sprouts in about 3
days. When the roots are 2-inches long, they are ready to eat.
1-part peas gives 2-parts sprouts.

Lentils - can be grown in either a glass jar or a plant pot and
need to be soaked for 12-hours. The sprouts are ready in 3-4
days. Lentil sprouts are ready to be eaten when the root is
1-inch long. 1-part lentils gives 6-parts sprouts.

Barley, Oats, and Rye - should be soaked for 12-hours and then
can either be grown as “grass” to harvest, or sprouts ready to
eat after 3-4 days. The ideal length for eating is about
1/2-inch. 1-part seed gives 2-parts sprouts.

Soybeans - can be grown in a glass jar or a pot. They need to be
soaked for 12-hours and sprouts are usually ready after 3-5 days.
They are ready to eat when the root is 2-inches long. 1-part
beans gives 4-parts sprouts.

Mung Beans - after soaking for 12-hours, these beans can be grown
by any method. Mung beans are the most commonly grown sprouts and
are usually ready to eat after 3-5 days. When the bright, white
root grows from 1-2 inches long, they are ready to eat. 1-part
beans gives 4-parts sprouts.

By growing your own sprouts, you will save yourself money because
it is less expensive to buy sprout seeds and grow and harvest the
sprouts yourself, than it is to buy the sprouts from a market.
Sprouting at home takes only a few minutes a day, and can produce
a good part of your daily requirements of the nutrients you need
from fresh produce. The hassles are minor, the costs are low, and
the freshness is wonderful.
