classic and contemporary styles

Classic style

The taste for the classic style has never gone out of fashion. Marble, mirrors with gilt frames or fabrics in intense natural colors are the elements that work to achieve this style. The use of furniture made from natural wood, wrought iron or wicker can also help us to give our rooms a delightful classical atmosphere.

While not turning their backs on technology, some interior designers have opted for the recovery of an old-fashioned esthetic which involves recycling old models or materials, inspiring them at the same time with a modern sensibility.

The task of reviving old formulas and adapting them to new contexts create a warm and casual atmosphere. For example, classic kitchens tend to have a warm, intimate character that makes them an attractive invitation to family meals. A bedroom with a certain classic air will project the comfort and warmth necessary for a pleasant rest.

Contemporary style

Far from the complexity of the classic style, contemporary trends in decoration use clean, essential lines. Favoring the use of white, delighting in empty space, today’s rooms are zones created to combat the chaos and incessant buzz of urban life.

In the most modern trends in decoration, glass has become one of the most outstanding features. For bathroom design, these transparent surfaces are extremely attractive, since their qualities (brightness, clarity and cleanliness) turn the bathroom into a zone full of light.

Along with glass, stainless steel has been the other favorite material. Thanks to its bright, metallic sparkle, steel can be combined with all sorts of materials and with numerous colorful accents and works of art.

Modern living rooms are created based on irony, on the juxtaposition of contrasting elements, the redefining of old standards, or breaking with convention. Modern kitchen design attempts to adapt itself to our frenetic contemporary way of life. For that reason, functionalism and rationality, clean, efficient lines have turned into indispensable guidelines for any model. Contemporary bedroom design attempts to adapt itself to the constant changes and new customs involved in everyday life. And the new materials, simple shapes and straight lines used in conceiving the latest trends in bedrooms, aim at creating a sense of calm.

Why is a Mattress so important?

Buying a mattress can always be put off until later. Or can it? You shouldn’t scrimp on the single most used piece of furniture in your house. This single item has a lot to do with your health and well being also. How and why should I select a mattress that’s right for me?

First, you must understand two basic mattress construction terms. The core is where the springs and structure are. This is what determines the longevity and support. Old mattresses used an inner spring design. Usually, the more inner springs used in a mattress, the better it was. Not so anymore. A current mattress design uses “zones” to locate the number and types of springs since our body weight is not evenly distributed, then why should the springs in our mattress?

The second construction term for a mattress is the upholstery. Several different types of foams, fibers, and materials make up this top layer. This gives the mattress the pillow top or soft feeling. Springs are there for support of this comfort layer.

I personally am sleeping on a Simmon’s Beauty Rest Back Care mattress. It has the wrapped spring coils and several comfort layers. It even has some memory foam. It is an excellent bed and it was reasonably priced.

I looked at several models today. It seems the inner spring mattress will be going to the way side after a few years. Everyone wants a memory foam bed. They have several to choose from, but they are all made out of the same material. This foam is nice and Sealy and Serta have finally come on board with their versions. The tepurpedic has been out there the longest and seems to be the best quality at the best price.

However, foam mattresses just don’t look like a regular bed. They look like a flashback to the days of the popular water beds. Its just not what we are accustomed to seeing. King Koil came out with a combination of this model. A traditional looking mattress, with contemporary foam for a core. You get the look of a regular bed with the benefit of a solid foam core. No more inner springs.

Comes to find out, the most sold mattress in the store where I was at, was the King Koil brand as I described above. Actually, the top 3 sellers were all King Koil brand, with only one of the three have an inner spring coil.

Beds weren’t meant to last forever. You can chunk it and get another. If it’s bad enough for you to get a new one, don’t pass it on and give problems to someone else, either. And don’t sell your old mattress as it is against the law in some states.

Senators Call for Bipartisan Action on Health Care Reform

During confirmation hearings on Capitol Hill for former Senator Tom Daschle, Democrat of South Dakota, voices as varied as Ted Kennedy (D-MA) and Bob Dole (R-KS), joined together to sing the praises of the nominee to lead the department of Health and Human Services, a department widely seen as the focal point of the new administration’s promised action on health care reform.

Senator Dole praised Daschle’s “acute understanding” of the issues involved in the monumental undertaking that is the reform of the American health care system.

When you consider that the Senate is, more than anything else, a club with membership privileges which (for the most part) go beyond partisan policitcs, Mr. Daschle’s nomination appears to be a done deal.

Those who are very interested in issues such as universal coverage, can take heart in the knowledge that Mr. Daschle (who collaborated extensively on health care reform with then-First Lady Hillary Clinton) will bring the energy and knowledge of the issues surrounding health care reform that will be definitely needed in the time ahead.

More pointedly, Mr. Daschle will have to sway a hostile GOP group, which sees the incoming president’s plans for a public health coverage scheme to compete with private insurance companies as an enemy of capitalism.

Whether the former senator’s influence on Capitol Hill will suffice to sway the GOP (and their supporters and lobbyists in the private sector ) remains to be seen. President-elect Obama has pledged to fix the husrting U.S. health insurance system once and for all (a mission which has been tried before), and Mr. Daschle definitely appears to be right man in the right place at the right time.

Gel Candles Myths

I heard that gel candles are more dangerous than regular wax candles.

I counted all 82 candle recalls on the Consumer Protection Agency website, but of those, only 5 were for gel candles. Gel candles do burn hotter than wax candles, so great care must be taken by the candle maker to insure that the glassware used to contain the gel be of sufficient strength so as not to explode when the candle is burned. Gel candles also burn 2-3 times longer, so the glassware can be exposed to greater heat for longer periods. It is important that the consumer purchase gel candles from a reputable retailer, who appreciates these issues with the glassware. Be sure to follow the instructions that are included with every candle and that you purchase them from reputable candle makers. Gel candles are 95% common food grade mineral oil and 5% resin.

Gel candles cost more than wax.

Sometimes gel candles may be higher in price, but keep in mind that these candles burn 2-3 times longer than wax so you are getting quite a good deal. Plus, the unique designs that can be made with the various embeds makes gel candles quite special.

I have heard news reports that say gel candles are using lead wicks.

I make gel candles and would have no idea where to even purchase lead wicks. All of our candles use a zinc or tin wick and that goes for both gel & wax candles. I heard that some foreign countries use lead wicks, but I can’t confirm this.

Buying Memory Foam After Katrina and Rita

One of the unforeseen consequences of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita has been the greatest increase in the price of polyurethane foam, including memory foam, ever experienced in the US.

The type of price increases we are talking about - so far, as of November 1, 2005, fabricators are seeing price increases of 77% in the cost of memory foam. And retailers are seeing price increases of 50% or more with further price increases to be seen.

The reason for these breathtaking price increases is the shortage or a key chemical called TDI. The processing plants that make TDI were devastated by the Hurricanes, and this has led to unprecedented shortages of this chemical. This has meant the key foam producing plants in the US are making just a fraction of the foam they had been making - and in some cases providing even huge mattress manufacturers like Sealy and Serta just half the foam they had been supplying.

This foam shortage along with the huge price increases has had a powerful effect on the memory foam business. Unlike regular bedding manufacturers that may only use a small bit of foam in making a mattress, memory foam mattress and memory foam mattress topper manufacturers whole product is foam - so their raw costs for their mattresses has skyrocketed.

What does this mean for consumers. First, expect to pay a lot more for a US made memory foam bed or memory foam mattress topper pad. Uniformly retailers have been hit with 50% price increases on these products, and they will be passing this on to you.

One option that many retailers are looking at is to look abroad - at memory foam mattresses and toppers that are made in China or other foreign countries not subject to these types of shortages and price increases. I would caution about buying the Chinese products for one main reason - all Chinese memory foams are severely compressed when shipping over to the US, and this can damage the foam and really diminish the benefits of the memory foam. So I really don’t advise buying these products unless you have a great warranty and also know that the mattress or mattress topper pad was only compressed for a short time (month or two).

Surprisingly, the biggest memory foam mattress manufacturer, Tempur-Pedic, hasn’t raised prices and has said they don’t intend to. They say that they have been shielded from the price increases since they source much of their raw materials from overseas sources. Whether this will continue to be true once they start their new, mammoth plant in New Mexico in the Spring of 2006 remains to be seen - its hard to understand getting the estimated 70 tanker trucks a day of raw material they need for this plant from overseas sources. So if you are interested in a Tempur-Pedic, you may want to shop now before any price increases that may be a result of bringing this new plant online in 2006. You may also want to check out the Tempur-Pedic buying guide on our site before buying - it has a lot of information on both the Tempur-Pedic mattresses as well as how to try to get the best deal.

How To Select The Right Area Rug

Area rugs can make such a beautiful contribution to any room and they are often the first thing that catches the eye as as you walk into the room. In view of that, doesn’t it make sense to select and choose the right area rug for each room of your home?

Of course, area rugs come in almost every size, shape and color combination imaginable, but a lot will depend on what the intended use is for the rug and the budget that you have to work with. In times past, only hand made rugs were considered to be of high quality and able to stand up to constant use and heavy wear, but thankfully advances have been in rug manufacturing and today’s machine made area rugs can offer a lot for the money as well.

In fact, for most people machine made rugs can be the best solution all around as they offer solid and durable construction and an incredibly wide choice of styles and patterns at very affordable prices that can range from fifty dollars up to a couple thousand dollars. If the rug will be used in a room that is not dedcorated with fine furniture and accessories, why spend the money for the most expensive rug to put on the floor? On the other hand, if your room is filled with very high quality furnishings, why would you want to to put down an area rug that does not fit with it’s surroundings?

Hand made area rugs are still considered the best available area rug product and they possess a look and feel that is superior to most machine made rugs. You will find that most handmade rugs use high quality wool for construction simply because wool seems to last much longer and stand up to heavier amounts of traffic than most other fibers. So pay attention to the material used to make the rug.

The weaving process of a hand made rug can be important too as the more densely the knots are placed together the higher quality of the rug. This is referred to as knots per square inch and hand made carpets can boaast a weave density of anywhere from 300 - 750 knots per square inch.

Of course, such high quality hand made area rugs can be very expensive, but if used in the correct surroundings and treated as a piece of fine furniture that is cared for properly, they will last for many years and look incredibly beautiful while doing so.

So when you choose an area rug, first determine where it will go and try to match the decor of that room as much as possible, then choose the level of quality that will match your budget, and you will be able to make a wise choice.

Parts of a Heating Stove

The following descriptions apply specifically to pellet stoves, but they can be used as a general guide for all types of heating stoves as most of them work on the same principles.

A typical stove will always have two fans that are used for combusting the fuel in one case and blowing that fuel through the heating ducts in the second case. Stoves will also have a firebox and a switchboard that you can use to control any part of the heating process that you would like. An auger system for movement of fuel is also essential and finally a hopper is the last device you will always see on a heating stove for storage of refill fuel.

In addition to these necessary components, many stoves will also come with different safety features such as extra thermometers with alarms and vacuum tubes that you can then use to suck material into a different chamber in order to prevent an explosion in the unlikely event that one may occur. Remote components such as an actual remote control are also a possibility on the higher end units.

While a typical heating stove will have all of the items described in the paragraph about necessary items, if you want to add the optional items discussed in the above paragraph, you will have to pay successively higher amounts of money for the final unit.

principle, tapestries tend to realize their fullest potential

definitely want to take into consideration when looking.

Now
the important thing do you want an original one or a
reproduction. Many, even most, old tapestries are in fragile,
weak, condition. Some antiques are pieces cut from a larger
original. Some have been substantially restored, sometimes
unprofessionally. It can be difficult to find them in top

reproduced attempt to capture the natural beauty. The other
