BT’s Superfast Network Raises Concern

A few weeks ago, British Telecom announced the revised date of completion of its superfast broadband network project. The new date is March 2012 than the earlier March 2013. This ambitious project promises to provide internet speed ten times faster than the present available speed.

Broadband network providers like TalkTalk and Sky Express have expressed certain reservations about the project and have suggested certain improvements to the project, which has a 1.5 billion pound budget. These service providers are future wholesale customers of BT and they are concerned about the fact that BT is yet to finalise any wholesale deal with them and with other operators.

Although the deputy head of strategy at Sky Express plans to provide BT with constant inputs about the best deals possible during the trial period, he is aware of the fact that attractive packages must be on offer to make the BT offering popular. These packages will contribute towards the success of the broadband network and make it financially viable.

Currently, both Sky and TalkTalk are using BT’s network, which will be provided by the pilot project BT Openreach. Charles Dunstone, chief executive of TalkTalk, has already voiced his scepticism about the service provided by BT Openreach in its present form.

To this scepticism, a BT spokesperson has tried to build confidence and has promised that after the pilot project, BT will be in a position to provide a much higher internet speed. Along with high speed, there will be reliability and flexibility according to the customer’s needs.
